Take Great Photos on your Phone – Mobile Photography Tips

Considering entering the 2019 RWAV Photography Competition but worried that you don’t have a camera? You don’t need an expensive set up to take a great photo, it is often true that ‘the best camera is the one you have on you’. Here are our top six tips for capturing great photos using your phone.

Use the Angles

Get creative with your compositions and capture things from down low, up high or just from a different angle.

Use the Grid

Utilise the rule of thirds to create stronger compositions. Divide the image into thirds and place the subject on one of those sides, instead of in the center. Turn on the grid feature on your camera.

Supercharge your phone

The lens on your phone is pretty good but there are ways to improve your results by adding a mobile lens. Grab a cinema quality lens from Moment. Download an app that lets you control the exposure such as VSCO.

Get up close

Sometimes taking a moment from up close changes how you see it. Show the moss, the bugs, the blossom and the parts that you don’t see unless you stop to look.

Use the Light

Use light to your advantage. Use the golden hours, the hour after sunrise and the hour before sunset, to get an orange light in your images.

Narrative

Tell a story with your shot. Bring some storytelling into your image. What can you see that you wouldn’t experience in metro? It is the moments that are unexpected that make living in the country great, share them.

The RWAV Photographic Competition is on again! From the rainforests of the Otways, to the plains of the Mallee and the rolling hills of Gippsland, Victoria’s healthcare professionals work everywhere and we want to see images from all of you. This year the theme is: Scenes of healthcare in rural and regional Victoria.

We want to see the work you do, the places you live and those you share country life with (bonus points for furry friends!). Images should depict scenes of healthcare, lifestyle, natural landscapes and should celebrate healthcare professionals in the country.
