In this two part series, we will be exploring what it’s like to provide locum services in the aftermath of a natural disaster, from the point of view of two doctors who were involved in devastating bushfires a decade apart.
The Black Saturday bushfires on the 7th of February 2009 were considered one of the worst bushfires in Australia’s history – destroying habitats and communities across Central Victoria. In the immediate aftermath of the fires, RWAV registered over three hundred locum GPs to volunteer in affected areas. The RWAV Locum Program was born out of this event, recognising the shortage of GPs in rural areas and the importance of locum relief to make sure healthcare is accessible in country communities.
In this episode we are joined by Dr Katrina White who has been a locum GP with RWAV since the beginning of the program when she volunteered her services to Flowerdale back in 2009.
