Occupational Therapist Rebecca Mckay – Loving the country lifestyle

Rebecca Mckay comes from a small rural farming town in Victoria. Her description brings to mind a mix of To Kill a Mocking Bird (the nice childhood parts) and that one Simpson’s episode where Bart prank calls Australia (picture one weatherboard house with the closest neighbour kilometres away).

Eventually, Rebecca came to the city to study but quickly realised that the concrete metropolis of Melbourne wasn’t for her. At the end of her last year of Occupational Therapy, she decided to relocate to Lakes Entrance and continue the lifestyle she knows and loves.

With some help from Rural Workforce Agency Victoria (RWAV), Rebecca found herself heading for Lakes Entrance and integrating herself back into the country life after four years away at university.

Unfortunately for Rebecca, the honeymoon period as a new graduate was cut short by the emergence of the global COVID 19 pandemic. Like so many of us, this meant that she soon found herself working from home and having to adapt. A new job is tough at the best of times, but starting in the allied health industry during extraordinary circumstances was tough, “You had to learn to think outside the box and prioritise. I definitely grew up a lot.”

Rebecca received a grant from RWAV to help her in her transition back to the country. This funding helped her establish herself quickly and meant that she could focus her attention on her work in the community.

For Rebecca, a relocation to regional Victoria was the right move. “You have got to love the lifestyle,” she said.
